Why Digital Storytelling?
As the video below reveals, the ability to tell stories using a variety of digital tools and strategies is currently a highly marketable skill, which draws on a long tradition of oral, written, and visual modes of expression. The digital story can and should unfold in a way that reveals process. In her article, "Rewriting the Rules, the New Voice of Journalism," Joyce Barnathan raises the issue that digital natives are searching for "personal" and "engaging" stories that reveal the process of learning, as well as the product. She gives the podcast Serial as an example in which journalist Sarah Koenig "used all of her journalism skills to tell a story in real time about a murder case that took place 15 years ago." The key word here is "real time." She goes on, "Journalists usually tell stories once they’ve completed their reporting. Instead, Koenig took her listeners with her as she looked into this case. She asked the hard questions. She revealed her inner thinking. She was probing, yet personal and passionate." In other words, according to iScoop, "you’re talking to, with and through people who have their own stories to share. That’s where the magic happens: in the meeting of stories."
The organization of this project Wiki follows the template pictured below as its model and it would last roughly 7-8 weeks.
